Sight Flow Indicator
A Sight Flow Indicator (also known as a visual flow indicator or pipeline sight glass) is a rugged, inline process safety device installed directly into pipelines to provide operators with a safe, real-time, and 360-degree visual window into the moving fluid stream. It serves as a critical manual monitoring point to verify fluid flow direction, color, clarity, and the presence of bubbles, turbulence, or contaminants without interrupting process operations.
Working Principle & Designs
Depending on the viscosity, velocity, and clarity of the target fluid, sight flow indicators utilize different internal mechanics to make flow changes easily recognizable at a glance:
- Plain / Full-View Type: Features a completely clear, cylindrical borosilicate glass sleeve providing maximum visibility. Perfect for observing continuous liquid streams, color blending, or line fullness in clean liquid processes.
- Flapper / Drip Lip Type: Utilizes a hinged, internal mechanical flapper that lifts in response to fluid movement. The angle of the flapper gives a rough visual approximation of flow velocity. Excellent for transparent liquids, gases, or downward-facing vertical lines where a drip lip shows steady condensation drainage.
- Rotary / Impeller Type: Equipped with a high-visibility PTFE or plastic paddle wheel that spins rapidly when fluid passes through. Ideal for clean, low-velocity liquids or dark/turbid fluids where clear vision is limited but mechanical motion can still be easily tracked.
- Ball / Float Type: Features a free-floating indicator ball that bounces or rises within the glass chamber as velocity increases. Most commonly used in low-flow gas or air purging lines.
